#371 - Chapter 105: The Enemy Arrives at the Capital (Part 2)
Kevan strode towards the army outside the city with several close attendants. A fierce cavalry squad dashed out from the dense military formation, rushing directly towards them like a whirlwind. The leading officer shouted loudly, "Who goes there? Halt!"
An attendant beside Kevan stepped forward and announced loudly, "This is Lord Kevan Lannister, the Hand of the King, here to see Lord Garon Morningstar!" After a brief exchange, the officer's tone softened slightly, "In that case, please have the Hand step aside and do not obstruct the army's advance. I will report this to the Lord immediately."
Despite some minor setbacks, Kevan finally met Liu Yuan as he wished. Liu Yuan and Becotte, along with several others, rode tall horses, stopping ten steps away from Kevan and his party, with no intention of offering greetings.
Kevan's expression was grave as he conveyed the King's decree in a low, powerful voice, "Lord Garon, without the King's decree, how dare you lead such a large army to approach King's Landing? What is your intention?"
Liu Yuan's lips curled into a faint, enigmatic smile, "Lord Kevan, what are you talking about? Why I've come to King's Landing, do you not understand? Please clear the way! I am here to defend the ancient rights of our noble houses, which even the King has no right to interfere with."
Kevan's face darkened, but he still tried to defuse the conflict, saying in a conciliatory tone, "This incident is just a misunderstanding. His Majesty also believes that the Church's actions were excessive. He will discuss the matter with the High Septon to ensure Lady Lyanna's safe return. I hope you will seriously consider withdrawing your troops."
However, Liu Yuan remained unmoved, a sneering, contemptuous smile playing on his lips, "And then what? Are you going to make us do a 'walk of atonement' like Cersei, under the gaze of the entire city? Or force our entire family to convert to the Faith of the Seven before granting us pardon? Our family's pride will never allow such desecration!" He resolutely rejected the Hand's proposal.
Kevan's face was exceptionally grim, his brow furrowed, as he said sternly, "Acting in this way will make you many powerful enemies. The Church's influence spans the Seven Kingdoms and can sway the positions of many lords. You are placing yourself directly in opposition to them."
However, Liu Yuan's gaze was exceptionally firm, and he responded without backing down, "Do you really think I care about those fellows? They are just a bunch of insignificant petty lords. I'm only here to bring back my sister. If they dare to hold her, I don't mind making the Faith of the Seven disappear from King's Landing! Anyone who tries to stop me, be it the Lannister family or the King, will become my mortal enemy and bear the brunt of my burning rage." Without another word, he waved his hand, signaling his men to leave.
With a heavy heart, Kevan had no choice but to turn back to the Iron Gate. Upon arrival, he immediately ordered his attendants to convey Lord Garon's words verbatim to the King and other important ministers. He himself remained at the city gate.
Those inside the Red Keep were shocked and enraged upon hearing this news. They never imagined that Lord Garon would be so arrogant and disregard the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in King's Landing!
Just then, a terrified soldier stumbled into the hall, his face flushed, gasping for breath, and shouted, "Your Majesty, it's terrible! Lord Garon's army is attacking the city!" This sudden bad news struck everyone present like a bolt from the blue, throwing them into panic.
King Tommen was stunned, his face instantly paling. He immediately ordered the soldiers to prepare for battle. Then, a shrill gong sounded from the walls of the Red Keep, and the few hundred guards quickly grabbed their weapons, standing ready.
Varys's face was as gloomy as a storm cloud, the situation having completely exceeded his expectations. His meticulously planned scheme with Illyrio had now fallen into complete disarray. A sudden turn of events had caused Garon to launch an attack on King's Landing. He cursed inwardly, "Damn Cersei! Damn the Church! Why did you have to provoke that guy? Now that the balance is broken, we must speed things up and bring the Lannister family to complete ruin!"
Just then, Varys caught sight of Duke Mace Tyrell heading towards the outside of the castle, and an idea immediately came to mind. He followed without hesitation.
Before the Iron Gate, war was imminent. Kevan stood firmly on the towering city wall, his hands gripping the hilt of his sword tightly. His eyes were as sharp as a hawk's, staring intently at the dark mass of enemy troops below, a sense of uncontrollable unease rising within him. Liu Yuan had warned him, giving him only an hour. And now, the army outside the city had begun to move, carrying out tense deployment work. Huge war elephants slowly dragged thick trees forward, while many soldiers busily trimmed the branches and wrapped them in iron. Clearly, they were building siege weapons.
Kevan knew that time was of the essence and had sent messengers to the Church to inform them of the situation, urging them to release the hostage as soon as possible. Minute after minute passed, each moment feeling especially long. He prayed silently, hoping that the Church would understand the seriousness of the situation and release the hostage quickly. But all three waves of messengers were blocked by the Warrior's Sons, not even able to enter the Sept, and the leader of the Warrior's Sons was actually his son, Lancel. He knew very well that facing such a large enemy force, whether King's Landing could withstand this attack was unknown.
Yarol quietly approached Jeslyn, lowering his voice, "Commander, are we just going to wait like this? They're about to attack!"
Jeslyn pulled him back, responding in a similarly low voice, "Don't worry, the time is not yet right. Go and tell the brothers to get ready, and open the city gate when I give the order. Also, find some capable men to come over. If the Hand orders us to fight, immediately tie him up."
As the final moment approached, no instructions were received from either the Church or the Red Keep. Kevan stood on the city wall, his mood growing increasingly anxious. Although he had made a decision earlier, he also knew that the consequences of this decision were extremely serious, and he couldn't help but feel hesitant.
Jeslyn gave his subordinates a look, then cautiously approached Kevan. At this time, the surrounding Gold Cloaks looked at Kevan and his attendants, their eyes filled with hostility and vigilance.
