Chapter 609 World 67
Chapter 609 World 67
“Stella,” Catherine said, pushing the door open and sitting down beside her, “do you know anything about magical items?”
“I know a little,” Stella asked directly, “Is there something wrong with what the mayor has?”
“Yes, there is,” Catherine said, placing the box she was holding on the table. “I don’t think I’ve seen the pattern on it before.”
After Stella made some preparations, she opened the box, inside which lay a copper bell.
Stella glanced at it, then plugged the bell to stop it from ringing. She turned it over to look at the back before saying to Catherine, "This looks more like the pattern of a small tribe in the north."
"The pattern itself was supposed to be for manipulation, but judging from the effect just now, the mayor did not play its due role."
Catherine asked curiously, "So how exactly do you use this?"
“I don’t know about that,” Stella said, shrugging. “I think you could ask the mayor. Since he’s using it, he must know the correct way to use it.”
"Unless... he stole this from somewhere else and only learned the most basic things himself."
“I wanted to ask him too,” Catherine sighed, “but he just wouldn’t say a word. He even considered killing himself after he found out I came from the Eugene family.”
“If the men I sent to guard him hadn’t been so vigilant, he probably would have succeeded.”
Stella thought for a moment: "Judging from his previous behavior, he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would easily give up his life."
“I think so too,” Catherine said thoughtfully, “I’m afraid it’s to hide something more important.”
Stella cautioned, "If that's the case, then we'd better keep a close eye on him, no, we'd better protect him."
"He's just an ordinary town mayor, not even a magician, yet he possesses such magical artifacts. Where did he get them from, without any backing?"
"Besides, do you think everyone in a town would willingly be controlled by him? I doubt it. But the fact that no one disobeys his orders shows that they are simply unable to resist."
"And what that little beggar revealed was that the mayor would arrest and sell people."
"The fact that he dared to shout this out means that such things have happened before, and there must have been more than one or two cases."
"These people he harmed can't all be ordinary people, right? Even if they are businessmen, don't they have connections to help them?"
“There must be a huge organization behind him,” Catherine thought, feeling a chill run down her spine.
How could a merchant who travels the trade routes not know many people? Of course not.
If someone like this can fall in this town, then the power behind this person must be terrifying.
Stella noticed that she seemed a little frightened and looked worried, so she said, "Let's all be on high alert today. Once Duke Eugene arrives with his men and someone takes over the investigation, you can finally get some rest."
Catherine nodded heavily: "I hope Father brings enough people."
As she spoke, she was about to get up to contact Duke Eugene, but after taking a few steps, she turned back and said, "Stella, your analytical skills are amazing. How do you do it? Can you teach me?"
Could Catherine lack analytical skills? Stella didn't believe a word of it.
However, she still replied, "You can read more books on reasoning. I learned it because I have a friend in my clan who really likes logical reasoning, and I practiced by reading and analyzing books with him."
“Wow,” Catherine blinked, “I didn’t know reading mystery books could be so rewarding. I’ll have someone gather more for me when I get back.”
After saying that, she tentatively asked, "Stella, when we first met, did you try to analyze me?"
“Of course there are,” Stella said without the slightest hint of guilt. “Didn’t I tell you that our teacher told us not to trust humans too easily?”
"I've suddenly gone from my tribe to a strange place, so of course I'll observe more."
"Although it was an accident that you found out, if you were a bad person, I would have run away in the first place."
Stella's sudden transformation from a cute and innocent little fairy into someone with brains contradicted the impression she had left on Catherine, but Catherine didn't feel that things had collapsed.
Compared to the naive little imp who could trust anyone, Catherine definitely preferred things to be the way they were now.
She was the only one who passed Stella's test, a statement so tempting that it was hard for her to resist.
If you were to ask Catherine how she knew she was the only one, it would be because Stella's behavior was too obvious.
Stella showed no interest in anyone but herself and barely interacted with anyone. Even when Duke Eugene stood before her, Stella showed no intention of saying a word.
Catherine doesn't consider herself a good person, but she likes the uniqueness that Stella brings.
"My pleasure."
A glint seemed to appear in Catherine's eyes. She didn't even plan to go out again, but instead contacted Duke Eugene directly from inside the house, asking him to bring more men.
Stella treated her specially, and Catherine didn't mind showing more of her true self in front of her.
After speaking with Stella, Catherine felt much better and even stopped worrying about the town.
Her biggest unease originally came from the "naive" Stella.
After learning that Stella, though naive, was not ignorant of the ways of the world and knew nothing, Catherine felt relieved, as if the last shoe had dropped, and she became at ease.
She could even talk to Stella about things that came out of the interrogation, and complain about her brother and sister who appointed the mayor.
Stella listened quietly to her, occasionally showing surprise, and finally asked about something that interested her.
"Where is that little beggar?"
"Although he was an accomplice of bad guys, he was still able to expose them to their faces in the end, which showed a lot of courage."
"Furthermore, I'm curious why the mayor remains unaffected when everyone in the town, whether forced or not, is driven by him?"
Catherine seemed to be suddenly reminded: "Stella, I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it. He didn't actually step forward to attack at that time."
"This is very strange; he must know more."
This time, Catherine was really going to get up and leave: "Stella, you get some rest. I'm going to find that little beggar now."
“Okay,” Stella said, glancing down at the box on the table. “Catherine, you forgot about this bell.”
“It’s alright, I’ll leave it here with you for now,” Catherine’s voice came from outside the door. “I don’t know when I’ll be able to rest today, and I wouldn’t feel at ease if I carried it with me, even if I put it in a storage ring.”
Stella glanced at the box, thought for a moment, then set up a burglarproof magic circle before closing the door.
Clearly, Catherine won't be bothering her again today, and Stella can finally rest in peace.
In the middle of the night, Stella opened her eyes and took back what she had said before going to sleep.
Tonight is going to be a sleepless night.
Stella sat up, didn't turn on the light, and went straight to the window to look down.
Someone crouched low, hiding in the shadows of the house, and slowly approached the inn's guards.
Stella, with her superior eyesight and hearing, realized that there were more than just one or two people coming.
As she was thinking about how to notify Catherine without alerting the visitors, she saw that the guards below had also noticed something was wrong and issued a warning without hesitation.
"Enemy attack!"
The next second, almost the entire inn came to a standstill. Seeing that things were not going well, the newcomer stopped hiding and confronted the guards directly.
There was a knock on the door, and Catherine walked in: "Stella, you're awake?"
She walked over to Stella and said, "Don't worry, I've made preparations in advance. As long as there aren't too many people, nothing will happen."
Stella paused, then covered her mouth, looking somewhat troubled: "Catherine, some things can only be said afterward."
"Huh?" Catherine was stunned for a moment, then realized, "Stella, you believe in this?"
"Don't worry, our family doesn't have any bloodline of Word of Power."
“No,” Stella said seriously, “Although very few people in this world can possess the power of words, there are plenty of jinxes. This doesn’t require bloodline inheritance.”
Catherine thought Stella was joking with her, and her expression relaxed a little: "Don't worry, I'm not that unlucky."
Stella hesitated, as if she wanted to say something but then stopped herself.
Catherine didn't notice that all her gaze was fixed on what was below.
For the time being, the Eugene family's guards seem to have the upper hand.
But gradually, Catherine began to feel that something was wrong.
"These people seem tireless. Even after being kicked against a wall and spitting blood, they can immediately get up and fight again."
Stella thought for a moment: "I remember my teacher saying that during the Holy War, there was a fearless team on the battlefield that helped the Temple of Light cause a lot of trouble for the Temple of Darkness."
"I think some of the traits the teacher mentioned seem similar to these people. What do you think?"
"During the Holy War?" Catherine's eyelids twitched, and she quickly remembered what Stella had said.
Although nearly five hundred years have passed, the person in charge of the Temple of Light at that time was the God of Law, Eugene. When he stepped down to the second line and left a protection for future generations, he also left behind many manuscripts and unknown secrets, one of which was the existence of this army.
So, as a young lady of the Eugene family, and having specifically looked through many of the family's books because she couldn't make any progress in magic, Catherine found that the difference between them wasn't that great.
Catherine lowered her eyelids to hide the strange look in her eyes from Stella, and said, "I think it's very similar, but I remember that the ancestral manuscripts said that the training methods of this team were extremely extreme, so they were destroyed long ago."
"Could it be that someone secretly intercepted it, or perhaps it was restored?"
Stella shook her head: "I don't know, I've only heard my teacher mention it."
"Catherine, since your manuscript mentions them, did it say how to deal with them?"
“They don’t feel pain or get tired, but your guards can’t; they need rest.”
"Although your guards still have the upper hand, they have started to get wounds. If we don't do something soon, the situation may soon turn around."
“Let me think about it,” Catherine thought for a long time, but still shook her head. “The manuscript says that if we want to defeat them, we must defeat the general who controls them.”
"After cutting off control, they naturally won't give any further instructions."
“The general who controls them,” Stella repeated softly, “but I don’t think anyone present seems to be in control of them, unless the mastermind is hiding.”
Catherine slammed her hand on the table: "Then we'll just have to incapacitate them, ugh..."
Catherine looked down and realized that she had just stepped on the anti-theft magic circle that Stella had set up, and her hand was pricked by the magic.
"Stella, why did you put it here?"
“I haven’t moved it since you left,” Stella said, pulling her hand to look at it. “Is it hurt?”
"It's nothing, it's nothing," Catherine said. She had only touched it accidentally and had no malicious intent or intention to obtain the box, so she was not harmed by the magic circle.
She glanced at her hands, then suddenly had a flash of inspiration: "Stella, you said that bell can control so many townspeople, could it control these people below?"
“Maybe it’s possible, but you don’t have the means to control it,” Stella said disapprovingly. “You’re not thinking of trying it, are you? I advise you not to.”
"Besides not knowing how to use it and being prone to backlash, we also don't know if there are any costs involved in using this thing."
"Catherine, you finally managed to break the curse, do you want to go through it again?"
“Of course not,” Catherine said immediately. “Stella, don’t worry, I was just saying. The people outside will be taken down soon. It’s not worth the risk for me.”
With that, Catherine opened the window and ordered the guards, "Break their legs so they can't move."
The guards did not answer, but they struck even harder.
Before long, these people lost their ability to fight.
Before Catherine and her guards could even breathe a sigh of relief, they heard the sound of a harp coming from afar.
The piano music was beautiful, the melody was smooth, and it was accompanied by singing.
Fearless warriors fight for the light.
After our victory, we became heretics.
We are tormented by illness and rejected by our own kind.
We wander the earth, yet have nowhere to stay.
If God cannot hear our prayers, we must heal ourselves...
"What song is this? The melody sounds pretty good, but the lyrics are kind of weird."
Catherine, accustomed to melodious tunes and the meticulously crafted poems of wandering poets, naturally looked down on this one.
Stella tugged at her sleeve and pointed to the people whose legs had been broken, saying, "Catherine, look at their legs, aren't they healed?"
Catherine looked in the direction Stella was pointing and was astonished to find that, to the strange singing, these people were actually able to stand up normally, and even their wounds in other places had healed.
“Be careful,” Catherine warned the Eugene family guards. “Be careful, don’t hold back.”
Eugene's guards were quite experienced and could handle the situation, but Catherine realized something was amiss.
"We absolutely have to find the person controlling things behind the scenes."
"They can recover, but we can't rotate our people. We'll be dragged down sooner or later."
"Stella, can you help me?"
