Chapter 214 Marine Brigade
Chapter 214 Marine Brigade
Hiroki Akishino and his brigade were the first to arrive at Urayasu; they belonged to the 16th Division.
Japan originally had only thirteen standing divisions before the Russo-Japanese War; divisions thirteen through sixteen were only added the previous year.
Because the 16th Division was entirely composed of reserve soldiers, most of whom had never seen combat, it was not transferred to Northeast China to participate in the war.
The 16th Division happened to be closest to Urayasu, so the Army Ministry directly ordered them to come and reinforce.
"Order the 76th Regiment to attack and advance immediately!" Hikaru Bingami shouted, holding up his binoculars.
His orders were to arrive at the scene and immediately launch an attack to drive the Chinese troops back into the sea.
Through the binoculars, one could see the beach several kilometers away, where densely packed Chinese troops and supplies were landing. Without a second thought, Bin Shang Yanshu immediately ordered his troops to begin the attack.
"Kill them all!" The Japanese officer raised his sword and led his soldiers in a dense formation, rifles in hand, to launch a direct attack on the Marine Brigade's defensive line.
"Commander, should we call in naval artillery fire?" Huang Dalei asked Commander Xiao Qiang from behind the bunker.
"No rush, let the brothers have some fun with these targets first! Hehe! Human wave tactics!" Xiao Qiang said with a look of disdain.
"Hide all your armored vehicles. Now is not the time for you to move out!" Xiao Qiang ordered as he saw Chen Dalei quietly walking out.
"Alright!" Chen Dalei scoffed. He was still hoping to take his tank up there and reap the rewards!
"Machine guns ready!" Dozens of general-purpose machine guns were set up on the Marine Brigade's defensive line, aimed at the densely packed Japanese troops charging forward.
"Fire! Rat-a-tat-tat..." Seeing that the Japanese troops had advanced to within about two hundred meters, Xiao Qiang gave the order, and the general-purpose machine guns unleashed streaks of fire.
Rows of Japanese soldiers fell in droves, while the Japanese soldiers behind them continued to charge forward desperately despite the hail of bullets.
The marine brigade's various mortars began to roar, raining down shells upon the Japanese troops. Each shell killed several Japanese soldiers, and corpses could be seen flying everywhere.
"Reload! Reload!" Gao Dabao shouted, quickly reaching into his pocket to pull out a cigarette and put it in his mouth.
That was so damn awesome! He just used a 250-round ammunition belt, which killed at least dozens of Japanese soldiers.
Seeing that the ammunition handler had reloaded his gun, Gao Dabao immediately pulled the bolt and yanked the trigger. The gunshots rang out again!
"Whoa!" The machine gunners fired with great excitement. The infantrymen also lay prone behind their bunkers and fired their rifles fiercely.
"Quick, light my cigarette!" Gao Dabao shouted as he lit it.
The assistant gunner quickly pulled out a match and lit it, while Gao Dabao, with a cigarette in his mouth, stuck his head over.
"Brother Da Bao, are you tired? How about I fire a few shots for you?" the assistant gunner said ingratiatingly.
"This is nothing! I could shoot all day and I wouldn't get tired! Hahahaha." Gao Dabao said with a wicked grin, a cigarette dangling from his lips, as he kept firing.
"Brigade Commander, we can't charge like this. The casualties are too high!" A Japanese lieutenant colonel stood aside and advised.
"No! We must keep attacking. The Chinese are landing in large numbers. We can't waste a single minute! We must push them back before they've completely landed!" Hikaru Bin said without giving any room for argument.
"Is the artillery regiment ready? Fire immediately! Take down the Chinese machine guns!"
"Yes, sir!" The lieutenant colonel next to him hurriedly went to give instructions.
Unfortunately, the Japanese artillery positions were attacked by the Marine Corps artillery as soon as they were deployed.
After capturing the Japanese positions, the Marine brigade sent scouts to occupy nearby high ground. The Japanese artillery had barely deployed when they were spotted.
Guided by the walkie-talkie, the Marine brigade's artillery fired several salvos, completely destroying the Japanese artillery.
More than an hour later, the tide of Japanese troops finally retreated, leaving behind a ground littered with corpses and wounded soldiers.
"Rescue the wounded! Reinforce the fortifications! Check the weapons! The Japanese won't give us much time to rest!"
The officers at the front of the Marine Corps brigade sprang into action, leading thousands of soldiers to reinforce fortifications in preparation for the next Japanese offensive.
The wounded and killed soldiers were carried to the back by their comrades!
"How are things? Lao Xiao, can you hold on? Should I send some men to help out?" Liu Shengguang led his guards into the command post of the 1st Regiment of the Marine Brigade.
"Hahaha! I haven't even had a chance to warm up my hands yet! The Japanese army has already been defeated! These little Japanese are too weak!" Xiao Qiang laughed arrogantly.
"Take it easy! Your Marine Corps brigade is the Marshal's darling. If the casualties are too high, you'll get in trouble!" Liu Shengguang said sourly.
"Which of our units isn't the Marshal's prized possession? Don't worry! The Japanese don't have any heavy weapons; they only know how to use human wave tactics. No matter how many come, they can't hurt a single hair on my head!"
Special units like armored divisions and marine brigades definitely receive better treatment. They get priority access to new and good weapons.
Xiao Qiang knew, of course, that Lu Jun was dissatisfied, but he certainly wouldn't admit it.
"Brigade Commander!" Several Japanese officers stood in front of Hikaru Hikoki, looking disheveled.
"You bastard, you damn bastard!" Bin Shang Yanshu roared in fury.
It's unclear whether he was scolding his officers or the Chinese army!
His brigade, with nearly ten thousand soldiers, suffered four to five thousand casualties in just over two hours of fighting. They were all decimated!
Most importantly, the casualties were so high. They hadn't even breached the first line of defense for the Chinese. He didn't know how to explain this to his superiors.
"Brigade Commander, request artillery guidance from the division headquarters! The Chinese firepower is too dense; our soldiers simply cannot break through their lines!" said the chief of staff beside him.
"Go down immediately and organize the troops to prepare for another attack!" Hikaru Binsho waved his hand.
"Yes, sir!" The officers quickly withdrew.
"Get me to the division headquarters!" Hikoki Bingami walked to the side and picked up the phone.
"Whoosh! Boom!" A shell landed dozens of meters in front of the position, blasting a crater several meters in size into the ground.
"The Japanese are shelling! Take cover!" the officers shouted. The soldiers scrambled into the trenches.
Gao Dabao quickly picked up the general-purpose machine gun and ran into the artillery shelter with the assistant gunner.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh," came the constant whooshing sound. Japanese artillery shells began to explode all over the Marine Brigade's positions.
A shell landed near a regimental command post, causing a large cloud of dust to fall from the roof!
"Damn it, it's a 150mm howitzer! That's equipment for a Japanese division-level artillery regiment." Xiao Qiang took off his hat, patted it, and then put it back on.
"Ask the reconnaissance company if they have located the Japanese artillery positions. Send the coordinates to the navy immediately."
The light cannons in his hands were no match for the Japanese heavy artillery!
"Yes, sir!" The staff officer hurriedly went to make the contact.
