Chapter 118: Very Soon
Chapter 118: Very Soon
The robbed that smiles, steals something from the thief.
But if someone becomes a thief when they don’t want to, they steal themselves from themselves.
If Zane returned Cynthia’s family heirloom, he would rise in rank.
If he stole the Relic and merged it with something, he would rise in rank.
For Cynthia’s quest, he had no definite time.
But for the relic, he had five days.
He wanted to become stronger and increase his rank and he had to do it fast. So naturally, he accepted the Ranked Quest indulging the Relic.
The system went away after that and Zane could finally bring himself back into the real world mentally.
While he talked to the system, he occasionally nodded at Xavier and Tesla whenever they spoke something.
He didn’t hear them all that well but he sure hoped he hadn’t nodded to something he didn’t actually want to do.
"Does anyone know where the diner is?" Zane asked.
Xavier frowned. "You just said you know where it is."
I did?
"When?"
"You nodded a few times." Tesla reminded him.
Zane chuckled.
Right.
"I did that. But I thought you should also know."
"It’s you who got a room where the other Halocrats live. We don’t belong to your batch." Xavier said.
Zane nodded again. This time for real.
All of them were standing at the reception hall of the dorm for students building.
The men and women hadn’t returned to their reception desks and the students had gone to the building meant for studying.
Only Zane and his team were present.
He didn’t know about the diner and he was in this situation because apparently he nodded when Xavier and Tesla asked him if he knew about it or not.
I better learn multi hearing.
All eyes were on Zane and he simply shrugged.
"I don’t—"
Wait.
Zane paused.
This might be the right time to test it.
Zane cleared his throat and said:
"I know where the diner is."
He lied through his strong teeth and waited.
"Yeah. You already told us that." Tesla said.
Zane ignored it and waited.
A few seconds passed, and nothing happened to him.
I see. That’s good.
Zane looked at Xavier.
"I lied. I don’t know where it is."
"Why?" Jammy asked.
"I was checking if the oath is still on me or not."
"So?"
"It is not."
"That’s good. We are going to lie a lot from here."
The janitor seemed to have some kind of plan as Zane wasn’t even thinking of anything other than food right now.
"Anyway, I just got here today as well. No way I would know where the diner would be." Zane added another fact.
This made more sense and everyone waited for someone to come so they could ask.
The Flamekeeper responsible for them also wasn’t present anywhere near them. The old man assumed that they knew about the place as well.
"It’s on the top floor. The fourth."
Someone answered.
Everyone looked around.
It belonged to a female and Zane turned back.
There were some females present in the Gutterborns behind him.
"Who was it?" Zane asked.
"It was my lady." The bodyguard spoke and all eyes went to Hena.
"She speaks." Jammy commented.
Hena shot a glare at the Janitor.
Jammy removed his cigar but before he could speak, Zane interrupted:
"Alright. Now we know where we have to go. Thank you."
He didn’t want the argument to go further.
Jammy would have remarked something else and Zane couldn’t handle another fight. Well, he could but he didn’t want to.
Besides, Zane wanted to know more about the people that were with him. They were nameless right now, he wanted to know them personally.
"Let’s go."
Zane climbed the stairs.
The others followed him.
Only Zane and Milo were in the front, everyone else was at the back. The stairs weren’t wide enough to carry more than two people.
They climbed the stairs fast as Zane knew everyone was hungry.
Being a gutterborn, he understood how a simple fresh bread was a cause of celebration for them.
Eventually, all of them reached the third floor.
The floor where Zane had his room.
He stopped at the floor.
People behind him did the same.
Zane turned around.
"I need something from my room. You can go ahead if you want."
Xavier nodded.
Zane turned around and walked towards his room.
But he stopped.
Little fingers held his hand.
Milo.
"Don’t go there."
Zane sat on his knees.
He caressed Milo’s cheek.
"There is nothing in the room, Milo. And only I am going. You will stay here. It will only take a second."
"If there is nothing in the room, what are you going to take?"
Zane smiled. "Smart girl, are you? Remember the black bag I brought with me. I want that. Alright? Stay with brother Xavier till then."
"Okay."
Milo nodded.
Zane stood up.
"But I will stay with the handsome uncle." Milo added.
Zane frowned.
"Who is that?"
Jammy came forward.
"You are always welcome, little girl."
He spread his arms.
Milo stepped back. "Not you."
Jammy turned to paper.
The bodyguard snickered.
Zane sighed.
"Stay with whoever you want. I’ll be back in a second."
Zane took off. He didn’t want to become a part of the drama.
He went straight to his room.
Milo didn’t insist on coming with Zane and when he saw the condition of the room, he understood why.
The door laid on the bed.
It had a hole on it and it wasn’t meant for a key.
There was no blood but it had memories.
Memories of Milo being dragged, screaming and terrified.
How alone must she have felt.
How much despair went through her heart in those moments.
Zane’s fist clenched on their own.
His blood rushed inside his body.
I will kill you, Kairon. You did everything right. But you chose the wrong girl.
He walked towards the table beside the blood and everything was as Zane had left.
Herring’s lunch box.
The spoon from Flora.
The family heirloom of Cynthia.
The idol of the First Flame was still in the Cathedral and Zane had left it there deliberately.
There was no need to prove his faith anymore.
He had already welcomed everyone to the age of death of reason.
And that would start with him forgetting the idol of a silent god.
But right now, he stared at the bad luck carrier family heirloom.
I will put you to good use. Very soon.
