Chapter 10: The First Pot of Gold Earned
Chapter 10: The First Pot of Gold Earned
In 1994, one cent could buy two peanut candies.
The vegetables in the garden weren't worth much money; Grandma Yufei was already extremely satisfied with selling them for 1.34 yuan.
She just hadn't expected that those white jade radishes would sell for so much.
"So many? How many radishes did you buy?" Grandma Yufei asked.
"I sell radishes for 1 cents a pound, that's the price set by that nanny," Yufei said, looking at her grandmother.
Grandma and Grandpa Yufei exchanged a glance and found surprise in each other's eyes.
Grandpa Yufei works at a hydroelectric power station and earns about 210 yuan a month.
On average, it's about 7 yuan a day. The radishes they sold today are twice their daily wage!
Grandpa and Grandma Yufei were a little bewildered by the money Yufei had given them.
Yufei didn't tell her grandparents about the 360 yuan she earned from the turtle; instead, she saved the money herself.
She's still a long way from her goal. It really proves the saying: as a child, you long to grow up; as an adult, you want to go back to childhood. -_-||
Even after Yufei fell asleep, her grandma was still excitedly telling her grandpa about the day's events.
"Keep this 16 yuan for Yufei, and give it to her mother when she comes back to pick her up," Yufei's grandfather said.
Grandma Yufei rolled her eyes at Grandpa Yufei.
"Do I need you to remind me? Do you think I'm the kind of person who's so easily fooled by money that I can't even look at myself?"
"Yes, yes, yes~ I know my old lady is the most reasonable person in the world," Grandpa Yufei said ingratiatingly.
"Alright, alright, you're so disrespectful to your age! You're so glib at your age, have no shame! Go to sleep!" Grandma Yufei said this, but her smile showed she was quite pleased.
After they finished talking, they drifted off to sleep.
Yufei listened to her grandparents' snoring, knowing they were fast asleep, and then entered the space.
Preparing for tomorrow's goods, Yufei is now worried about what to pack. She has enough radishes, but what can she use to pack them tomorrow that can hold a lot and be transported to her grandparents' house?
She sat on the warehouse bench, perplexed.
Granny Chun looked at Yufei, who had a worried expression, and asked her what trouble she had encountered.
Yufei spoke to Granny Chun, who then thought for a moment and went to the backyard of the kitchen, where she found a cart.
"I don't know if this is okay. I saw it there and thought it looked like a means of transportation, but I've never seen it before," Granny Chun said, bringing it to Yufei's face.
Yufei slapped her forehead, inwardly cursing herself for her forgetfulness! She had forgotten about the broken cart that she had retrieved and repaired using wood from her spatial storage.
Yes! We can use this. She vaguely remembered hearing from the villagers that it could hold 200-300 jin (100-150 catties) of goods.
So she loaded 260 jin (approximately 180 catties) of white jade radishes onto the cart, so she and her grandparents could push the cart over tomorrow.
So she took a nap in the space, and used the rest of the time to harvest the ripe rice and help Granny Chun.
She also learned from Granny Chun how to conduct herself in society and how to treat guests.
Then I slept in the space again for another night.
When she left the space, the clock in the guesthouse showed 5:46.
As dawn broke, Granny Chun followed Yufei out of the space and, as Yufei had planned, left the guesthouse. In a secluded spot, she placed the cart out, awaiting Yufei's arrival.
Yufei waited for about 10 minutes and then woke up her grandparents, telling them that the nanny had arrived. The two elders quickly tidied themselves up and went out with Yufei.
"Granny!" Yufei greeted Granny Chun warmly when she saw her at the alley entrance.
Then, skipping and hopping, she led her grandparents to Granny Chun.
"Hello, sir/madam!"
"Hello! Hello! Thank you for your trust in Yufei." Granny Chun and Yufei's grandparents warmly shook hands with each other.
"No, no, don't underestimate Yufei just because she's small! Yufei is really good at grocery shopping, she helped me a lot!"
Granny Chun's communication with Yufei's grandparents demonstrated excellent upbringing, completely gaining their trust and successfully completing the little master's task.
After Granny Chun and Yufei carried the white jade radishes to the entrance of the market, they made an excuse to leave. Yufei's grandfather also left at the same time to go to work.
When Grandma Yufei and Yufei arrived at Jiang Xiaohua's seafood shop, a long queue had already formed.
The people in line saw Yufei and her group and their eyes lit up as they greeted her, urging her to hurry back to her stall.
They even made way for her, and Yufei, walking between the two lines, actually felt like a big shot traveling.
Grandma and Grandpa Yufei, who had never experienced such a grand occasion before, were both shocked and excited.
When they arrived at the stall, several people at the front of the line excitedly said...
"Xiaoyufei, why are you so late? Your stall was almost taken by someone else. We argued with that person and reserved the spot here so they wouldn't succeed."
"Thank you, aunties and grandmas," Yufei said, expressing her gratitude.
We started getting busy, and this time quite a few repeat customers wanted to buy in bulk, ten pounds at a time.
Those who hadn't bought it before were amazed, wondering if the radishes were really that delicious. They had originally planned to buy only a pound or two, but now they were thinking of buying more.
When Yufei bought the 10th or so, she recognized him as an old acquaintance, Zhu Xiangui!
"Little kid, I'll take all of these white radishes for 2 mao a pound."
Zhu Xiangui, with what he considered his most benevolent smile, spoke to Yufei.
Yesterday, he bought the best soft-shelled turtle, black carp, and some mountain delicacies and handed them over to the kitchen at the hotel. One of the chefs asked if he had bought the white jade radish.
He was completely baffled, but later he found out that the person who came from the port city that afternoon had specifically requested to eat white jade radish.
I don't know where they ate that dish made with white jade radish yesterday at noon, but they can't stop thinking about it.
So when I arrived at the restaurant, I specifically asked for this dish, but they didn't have it!
When Zhu Xiangui returned, he asked him if he had bought it.
How did he know this thing would suddenly appear? Who would stare at a radish? He's always buying up rare and valuable ingredients!
Although the soft-shelled turtle he bought later won over the palates of the distinguished guests from the port city, they still occasionally remarked that it would have been even more perfect if it had been served with white jade radish.
He got up especially early today just to see how delicious the white jade radish they were talking about really was.
We also gave some white jade radishes to the guests from the port city to fulfill their wishes.
He just didn't expect to find this when he got there... -_-|| Wasn't this next to Old Gao's house where we came yesterday?
It's like searching for her a thousand times in the crowd, only to find her suddenly standing there, in the dim light.
Old Gao has hidden something good again! I should come to Old Gao's place more often; who knows what other good things he might be hiding from him.
Zhu Xiangui made up his mind while waiting in line.
